Music of the Movies highlighted at OSU Recital

Music is a vital part of the success and feel of any movie, and well-known favorites of this genre will be performed on Tuesday, Sept. 12, at the Orchestra of Southern Utah’s 10th annual Fall Recital Series. This recital is the second of six evenings of music presented at 7:30 p.m. in St. Jude’s Episcopal Church, 70 North 200 West in Cedar City.  Suggested donation is $5 for adults and $3 for students.

The Southern Utah String Quartet performs music from The Muppet Movie, The Jazz Singer, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The quartet consists of violinists Patty Walser and Suzanne Stewart, violist Sara Penny, and cellist Leah Brown. All are music teachers in the area and active members of OSU.

The music of composer John Williams is legendary. Violinist Marisa Barth will perform the moving theme from Schindler’s List. Mary Anne Andersen will accompany on piano. Marisa is also a ballerina and studies violin with OSU Music Director and SUU violin professor Xun Sun.

Sara Penny, violin, and JoAnn Jones, piano, present a romantic medley of Puccini’s opera music, which is very often featured in motion pictures. The medley consists of pieces from La Boheme, Gianni Schicchi, and Tosca.

One of the best known Broadway musicals adapted to film is The Phantom of the Opera. Soprano Megan Harris and tenor Tyler Reidhead sing “All I Ask of You” from the Andrew Lloyd Webber blockbuster. Both are high school seniors, students of Jackie Riddle-Jackson, and returning recital performers. They will be accompanied by Maria Reidhead on piano.

Latin dance music frequently provides the rhythm and pulse for such movies, and “Fandago” by M. McLean is no different. Violinists Karaly Carter and Mary Furse are cousins and enjoy performing together.

Western movies have a long history and very regularly use snatches of folk songs in their musical scores. The accomplished trio of Dai Weisi, violin, Victoria Andrus, viola, and Nina Hansen, cello, performs a medley of folk songs including the Scottish tune “Petronella” and the American song “Arkansas Traveler.” Dai Weisi, from Changsha, China, returns to the United States after soloing with OSU in 2004. She recently finished a bachelor in music from the Wuhan Conservatory of Music in China and is currently studying English at Southern Utah University. Victoria graduated from SUU in Music Education, played with the Las Vegas Philharmonic, and is currently the principle violist with the Southwest Symphony. Nina is the principle cellist for OSU and recently traveled to China and performed with the Hunan Symphony Orchestra.
