Viola Soloist to Perform with Orchestra of S= outhern Utah

 

   &nbs= p;        Sharon Wei, guest viola solo, will join the Orchestra of Southern Utah for their F= all Concert on Friday, November 2nd at 7:30 pm at the Heritage Center in Cedar City, Utah.  Wei has performed in solo recitals throughout the United States, Canada and Europe.  She played at Carnegie Hall multip= le times as the principal violist of the New York String Orchestra. Sharon Wei excelled in Canada at = the University of Western Ontario.  She continued her studies at the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music with Roberto Diaz and Karen Tuttle, a= nd at Yale <= st1:PlaceType w:st=3D"on">University under Jesse Levine.  She taught at Yale before her rece= nt move to California.

   &nbs= p;        Music Director and Conductor Xun Sun leads the Orchestra.  Sun serves as the Director of Orchestral Activities at SUU. This fall he guest conducted a program of American music in the Ukraine.  In 2003, Sun became the Music Dire= ctor and Conductor of OSU. He is also currently the principal guest conductor of= the Hunan Symphony Orchestra, China.   As a violinist Sun has given numerous solo recitals throughout the United States and China.  Sun was born in City of Taiyuan, Ch= ina.  His talent became evident at an ea= rly age and began his formal music training and violin studies at Wuhan Conservatory of Music at age eleven. 

   &nbs= p;        Wei and OSU will perform “Concerto in G Major for Viola” by G. Ph. Telemann, and Yizkor by Oedoen Partos.   The symphony orchestra also presents the “New World Symphony” by Dvorak.

   &nbs= p;        “Concerto in G Major for Viola” is the first known concerto for viola.  It was written during the Renaissa= nce in the Baroque style; this style is still well-recognized today.  Wei will be featured in the perfor= mance of this piece.

   &nbs= p;        Wei will also join the Orchestra of Southern Utah in “Yizkor”.  This vivid piece invokes memories = of loved ones departed and was written as a tribute to the millions of individ= uals who died during World War II.

   &nbs= p;         “New World Symphony”, a= lso known as “Symphony No. 9”, was based on Native American music a= nd African-American spirituals.  = Its second movement inspired the spiritual-like song “Going Home.”<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>  The November 2nd perfor= mance of “New World Symphony” will feature OSU member Virginia Stitt = on English Horn.

   &nbs= p;        Sponsors for this concert are Dennis Loeffel, the Southern Utah Foundation, United Way<= /st1:address> of Iron <= st1:PlaceType w:st=3D"on">County, the Utah Arts Council, and= the National Endowment for the Arts.

            The Fall Concert on November 2nd is open to the public.   Children over the age of six= are welcome to attend when accompanied by an adult. OSU requests that babies and children under the age of six not attend as the performance will be recorded and broadcast worldwide. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students, and $30 for groups of six.  Th= ey may be purchased at the Heritage Center Box Office (105 North 100 East).  Tickets for low income seniors are available the week before the concert at the Senior Centers in Cedar City and Parowan courtesy of the United Way of Iron County.
