ry-region>,
the Master Kung (known in the West as Confucius) made his beneficent influe=
nce
felt in <st1:PlaceName w:st=3D"on">Cedar</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:s=
t=3D"on">City</st1:PlaceType>
last Thursday evening at the Talent Showcase hosted at the <st1:place w:st=
=3D"on"><st1:PlaceName
 w:st=3D"on">Heritage</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st=3D"on">Center</st=
1:PlaceType></st1:place>
by the Orchestra of Southern Utah (OSU).<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&n=
bsp;
</span>As listeners thrilled to the wonderful music shared by talented guest
artists, they might well have reflected on the words of the Chinese sage, w=
ho
declares in The Analects that the wise man is &sup3;perfected by <span
class=3DGramE>music.&sup2;<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>Fo=
r</span>
not only did the music draw the audience closer to a world of harmonic
perfection, but it did so in part through the talents of visitors from
Confucius&sup1;s homeland.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:non=
e'><span
style=3D'font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"'>By evening&sup1;s end,=
 the
audience understood just how fortunate Cedar City is to have in Prof. Xun S=
un
not only a gifted conductor for OSU but also an ambassador for cross-cultur=
al
exchange.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>For it is Sun&sup1;s
recent work as a guest conductor for the Hunan Symphony Orchestra that open=
ed
the doors allowing incomparable Chinese musicians to come to <st1:place w:s=
t=3D"on">Southern
 Utah</st1:place>.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span><o:p></o:p=
></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:non=
e'><span
style=3D'font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"'>To be sure, a number o=
f the
invited soloists Thursday night were not Chinese.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>Indeed, Cedar City&sup1;s own Pete=
 Akins
was the featured soloist for the evening&sup1;s first number, Strauss&sup1;s
Horn Concerto No. 1 in E Flat Major.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;
</span>OSU&sup1;s executive director, Akins had dreamed for twenty-five yea=
rs
of playing a French horn solo with a symphony orchestra.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>As his instrument poured forth its=
 deep
melodies, listeners savored a wonderful fusion of grace and power, keenly
appreciative of how the fulfillment of one man&sup1;s dreams enriched the
waking lives of many.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:non=
e'><span
style=3D'font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"'>More ethereal and <span
class=3DSpellE>spritely</span>, the evening&sup1;s second
selection&#8249;Saint-Sa&euml;n&sup1;s Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso a=
lso
featured a soloist from <st1:State w:st=3D"on">Utah</st1:State>, fifteen-ye=
ar-old
David Price from Alta High in <st1:City w:st=3D"on"><st1:place w:st=3D"on">=
Sandy</st1:place></st1:City>.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>Price&sup1;s rare mastery of the v=
iolin
shone with rare luster, as this young virtuoso carried listeners from liquid
reverie to pyrotechnic <span class=3DSpellE>freneticism</span>, all against=
 the
orchestra&sup1;s sonorous background cadences.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>No doubt, the exceptional poise of=
 this
teenage musician reflected an already distinguished performance
r&eacute;sum&eacute;, including an appearance with the Utah Symphony when he
was just twelve.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:non=
e'><span
style=3D'font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"'>It was not Price&sup1;s
remarkable past work, however, but rather his breathtaking magic of this
particular night that brought the audience to their feet for a standing ova=
tion
at the conclusion of his number.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:non=
e'><st1:State
w:st=3D"on"><st1:place w:st=3D"on"><span style=3D'font-size:10.0pt;font-fam=
ily:"Courier New"'>Utah</span></st1:place></st1:State><span
style=3D'font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"'> talent also dazzled t=
he
audience in the evening&sup1;s fourth number, the First Movement of
Ravel&sup1;s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, with <span class=3DSpellE>Je=
sina</span>
<span class=3DSpellE>Byington</span> playing the piano solos.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>True, <span class=3DSpellE>Byingto=
n</span>
now lives in <st1:City w:st=3D"on">Seattle</st1:City>, but she studied musi=
c at
the <st1:place w:st=3D"on"><st1:PlaceType w:st=3D"on">University</st1:Place=
Type> of
 <st1:PlaceName w:st=3D"on">Utah</st1:PlaceName></st1:place>.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>And as her fingers gracefully segu=
ed
from serene passages of pensive reflection to rousing runs of electric ener=
gy,
listeners could only be grateful for her willingness to return to the state=
.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:non=
e'><span
style=3D'font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"'>Cedar City resident <s=
pan
class=3DSpellE>Cris</span> Talley deepened listeners&sup1; sense of gratitu=
de as
his richly textured baritone voice celebrated both the divine love worshipf=
ully
expressed in Davis&sup1;s &sup3;Holy Ground&sup2; and the fully human love
of<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>Perito&sup1;s &sup3;It&sup=
1;s
Impossible.&sup2;<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>In arrangin=
g the
Davis number for this performance and in accompanying Talley on the piano, =
Dr.
Hal Campbell yet again lent his rare skills in support of OSU&sup1;s missio=
n,
as he has so often in years past, making it entirely appropriate that OSU c=
hose
this occasion to honor him with a plaque for his service.<o:p></o:p></span>=
</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:non=
e'><span
style=3D'font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"'>The last of the showca=
sed
local musicians, Brooke Mac <span class=3DSpellE>Naughtan</span> and Heather
Leavitt brought to Vivaldi&sup1;s Concerto in G Minor for Two Cellos the
celestial delicacy, grace, and balance associated with 18th-century royalty=
.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>Their gowns almost as beautiful as=
 their
music, this dazzling pair of sisters stirred in listeners a renewed sense of
how an exquisitely refined sense of form and balance actually liberates the
spirit from the dreary constraints of the everyday.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:non=
e'><span
style=3D'font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"'>But listeners experien=
ced a
different kind of liberation as they listened to the visiting Chinese artis=
ts
repeatedly spotlighted during the evening&sup1;s entertainment.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>The concert hall seemed almost to =
lose
the tethers tying it to earth when Qin Li raised her heavenly voice in the
Chinese folk song &sup3;Friendship Forever.&sup2;<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>For the benefit of English-speaking
listeners, OSU director Xun Sun explained that this empyreal song celebrates
the way the splendor of a true friendship surpasses the merely natural char=
ms of
trees and flowers.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>But even w=
ithout
Sun&sup1;s helpful explanation, listeners could feel the way Chinese music
beckons listeners toward transcendent magnificence, drawing their souls tow=
ard
perfection in the very way the Master Kung recognized.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:non=
e'><span
style=3D'font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"'>Less awe-inspiring but=
 more
playful was Li&sup1;s second number, &sup3;Long Boat Song,&sup2; in which Li
reenacted the part of a perplexed Chinese young woman calling out for help =
in
crossing the water, her cries eliciting jocular responses from the members =
of
the OSU, who answered in chorus&#8249;all in well-memorized Chinese!<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>For sheer fun, no number surpassed=
 this
song!<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:non=
e'><span
style=3D'font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"'>Returning to a more se=
rious
vein, <span class=3DSpellE>Ke</span> Ma ventured into Chinese Folk Opera to
perform <st1:PlaceName w:st=3D"on">&sup3;Hong</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType
w:st=3D"on">Lake</st1:PlaceType>, My <span class=3DGramE>Motherland.&sup2;<=
span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>In</span> this outpouring of love =
for a
geographically magnificent region of <st1:country-region w:st=3D"on"><st1:p=
lace
 w:st=3D"on">China</st1:place></st1:country-region>, <span class=3DSpellE>K=
e</span>
Ma sent her voice soaring in enormous spirals above a vast and impressive
landscape charged with intense emotion.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:non=
e'><span
style=3D'font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"'>Joining <span class=3D=
SpellE>Ke</span>
Ma for the final number of the concert were Qin Li and two male Chinese
singers, De-<span class=3DSpellE>Sheng</span> <span class=3DSpellE>Xie</spa=
n> and
Dian <span class=3DSpellE>Xong</span>, dressed in the very colorful Chinese=
 folk
costume of the <st1:State w:st=3D"on"><st1:place w:st=3D"on">Hunan</st1:pla=
ce></st1:State>
province.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>The dynamic interpl=
ay of
male and female voices in &sup3;Liu Yang River,&sup2; a Chinese folk song,
reminded listeners of how music oversteps merely linguistic boundaries.<o:p=
></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:non=
e'><span
style=3D'font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"'>At the concert&sup1;s =
close,
OSU conductor Xun Sun honored his Chinese guests with a special plaque
recognizing their contribution of Cedar City&sup1;s musical heritage.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>But then the Chinese entourage
graciously reciprocated, presenting a series of four colorful scrolls of
Chinese art, collectively entitled &sup3;The Four <span class=3DGramE>Seaso=
ns.&sup2;<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>After</span> all, the group remark=
ed
(with Sun translating), &sup3;We all share the same earth, the same
seasons.&sup2;<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>That sharing m=
ay
soon be more fully two-way: the visitors from China concluded the evening by
inviting the Orchestra of Southern Utah to perform in Hunan Province in 201=
0,
just nine or ten seasons from now.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; <=
/span><o:p></o:p></span></p>
