Musical Families Gather For Opening of OSU Recital Series

Musical Families to Gather for Opening of OSU Recital Series

The Orchestra of Southern = Utah will begin its 11^th annual Fall Recital Series Tuesday, Septembe= r 4^th at 7:30pm at St. Jude’s Church (70 North 200 West). This year’s series celebrate= s some of Southern Utah’s own musical families, including internationally performing 10-year-old Jessi Kate Riley and her grandmother Kathy Riley.

Violinist Jessi Kate Riley= will perform a Concerto No. 23 in G majo= r, Allegro by J.B. Viotti, accompanied by her grandmother Kathy Riley. This 10-year-old from Beaver has a= lready made a name for herself throughout the local, as well as international, community. Jessi Kate won the= State Farm Bureau Talent Show Find in 2004, the Talent Award for her age group in= the 2006 International Cinderella Scholarship Pageant, as and an Honorable Ment= ion at the 2006 State Fair Music Competition.&= nbsp; She was also chosen to be a soloist at the International Suzuki Conference in Turino, Italy in 2006, and traveled to Italy to perform.

The Riley family is not th= e only musical family slated for this memorable evening. Over 20 gifted musicians = and vocalists from the Southern Utah area will grace the opening performance.
The Patrick and Rachel Rou= let family spent their summer in Maine, studying and teaching music. Having returned to Cedar City, Pat= rick will resume performing percussion for OSU and teaching percussion at Southe= rn Utah University. His wife, Ra= chel, an accomplished pianist, will continue performing as a soloist and accompanist. The Roulet famil= y will contribute two numbers to the recital’s impressive program. Charlotte, who plays double bass, = and Rachel will perform Impertinence by George Frederic Handel. The R= oulet family will then perform Eli Green's Cakewalk by Sadie Koninsky with Celia on xylophone, Rachel on piano, Charlotte on bass and Patrick on drums.

Cellomania, under the dire= ction Nina Hansen, lead for OSU’s lower strings section, will perform serie= s of duets and ensemble pieces. Al= icia Husselbee and Nina Hansen will perform Sis-Boom-Bah by F. Wohlfahrt, Hickory, Dickory, = Dock, and Minuet by Bach. Ethan Hansen and Nina Hansen will perform Canon by Rudolph Matz a= nd Kolo (Croatian Dance) by Rudolph M= atz. Kim Jones and Nina Hansen will per= form Finale from The Water Music by Handel.&nbs= p; Heather Leavitt (Cellomania’s Assistant Director) and Nina Han= sen will perform Allegro from Concerto Grosso in D Minor, Op. 3 #11<= /i> by Antonio Vivaldi. Cellomani= a will then perform French Folk Song&n= bsp;(a Cellist International Folk Song), F= ugue by Johann Pachelbel, Das Lied vom B= raven Mann Rondo from The String Quin= tet for Three Cellos by Luigi Boccherini. Cellomania is comprised of Nina Ha= nsen, Heather Leavitt, Kim Jones, Ethan Hansen, Dane Stults, Emily White, Beth Ganowsky, and Alicia Husselbee. Nina’s group of talented youth is preparing for several performances in China.

The Mark and Rebecca Hanse= n family has been performing throughout the community for local and church events as part of Cascade Strings and Suzuki Strings. The family (which includes children Jacob, Eric, Ryan, McKenna, and Ethan) will perform three numbers: Old Joe Clark, arranged by Hall; Wake Up Susie Reel, arranged by Ca= rol Fife; and Minuet by J.S. Bach.<= /p>
LeGrand and MaryAnn Anders= en will be performing Sonata in D, K. 281 f= or Piano Four Hands by W. A Mozart. The Andersen’s came to Cedar City after retiring a distinguish= ed teaching career. Now that they’re here, they have continued teaching. LeGrand has served a Music Directo= r for USF Playmakers and several SUU productions while Mary Ann has started a pub= lic book club for the Cedar City Arts Council.

David Bolsover and Carol J. Bontrager Wagers will perform Porgy= and Bess Selections by Gershwin. David performed saxophone professionally w= ith artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Slide Hampton, Ernie Watts, The Temptation= s, the Four Tops, Rita Moreno and many others. He studied saxophone with Gary Kel= ler and Gary Campbell and Improvisation with Vince Maggio, Whit Sidener, and Ron Miller. He has also studied f= lute and clarinet. David currently performs with the Win Seegmiller Big Band. Carol studied with Max Daehler in = Cedar Rapids, Iowa and has performed both violin and piano. In Las Vegas she was the keyboardi= st for the contemporary worship service at University United Methoddist Church for eight years until her retirement from the Clark County School Distict, where she was a high school counselor and choir accompanist.

Fred Dunnell and his daugh= ter Teri Kenney will also share their musical gifts with the community, something Fr= ed has enjoyed throughout his life. Teri will provide accompaniment on the piano while Fred sings Without a Song from the musical Gr= eat Day, lyrics by William Rose and Edward Eliscu, music by Vincent Youmans; an= d Goin’ Home from the Largo of= the New World Symphony by Anton Dvorak.

The Ken and Sandy Hedgecoc= k Family have performed a number of times, both nationally and internationally. Ken, who leads the brass section f= or OSU, recently visited the Ukraine to perform trombone. He and Sandy have considerable performance experience in California and Utah. The children sing and play a varie= ty of instruments. For the recital = on September 4^th, the family will perform For The Longest Time, T= he Lord Bless You And Keep You, and For= Good from Wicked, in addition to a trombone solo by Ken.

Blaine and Kirsten Hofelin= g and their children Nathan, Catherine, Christiana, Matthew, and Daniel, spent a month performing at Nauvoo this summer.&nb= sp; Back in Southern Utah, the children actively participate in Cascade Strings and Suzuki Strings; the two oldest children perform in OSU. The Hofeling family will perform t= wo numbers, including Irish Washerwoma= n for the recital.

This gathering of Southern Utah’s musical families promises to be an evening of enjoyment. Gather your family, young and old,= for this memorable event. Childre= n and adults of all ages are welcome. A donation of $5.00 per adult and $3.00 per child is suggested.
