Going for Baroque
The Orchestra of Southern Utah will open their Twelfth Annual Fall Recital Series on Tuesday, September 2nd at 7:30 p.m. with an evening entitled Basically Baroque. The recital will take place at St. Jude’s Episcopal Church, located at 70 North 200 West in Cedar City. “We appreciate St. Jude’s Episcopal Church for sharing their beautiful building, which has excellent acoustics for music,” stated OSU Recital Director Sara Penny.
The term Baroque, in reference to music, describes an era of European classical music. This era began after the Renaissance (approximately 1600 A.D.) and ended at the dawn of Europe’s Classical music era (about 1750). The Baroque period gave birth to many musical forms still recognized today, including the concerto, sonata, and opera.
The evening will include performances by sisters Madilynn and JessiKate Riley of Beaver, Utah. Madilynn, who recently earned an honorable mention at the Utah State Fair Music Competition, will perform a Telemann Viola Concerta and the hauntingly beautiful “Spanish Dance” by Moskowski. JessiKate will perform the first movement of the Bach “A Minor Concerto for Violin” and “Meditation” from the opera Thais by French composer Jules Massenet. JessiKate placed third in her division at the State Fair. Both young ladies will be accompanied by their grandmother, Kathy Riley.
Sharla K Winn, flute, and Calli Grimshaw, piano, will present “Sheep Shall Safely Graze” (Cantata No. 208) by well-known composer Johann Sebastian Bach. This peaceful cantana is an excellent example of the Baroque technique ground bass, or repeated bass line.
Pastorale, Op. 13 No. 4 by Antonio Vivaldi will feature the talents of pianist Tracey Bradshaw, cellist Brooke McNaughton, and violinist Sara Penny. Tracey has performed piano extensively, including during the OSU Eleventh Annual Recital Series in 2007. Brooke and Sara are both OSU musicians.
Jacob Lee and his grandfather Dr. Hal Campbell will perform the first movement of Piano Concerto No. 4 in D minor by Russian pianist and composer Anton Rubenstein.
The 12th Annual fall Recital Series is designed to give musicians the opportunity to perform and provide live music for the Cedar City area, though their music is also podcast via the OSU website, reaching people literally all over the world. The series opens with the September 2nd Baroque recital and will continue to take place every Tuesday evening through October 7th. Each recital will highlight a different musical style. American Popular Music will be featured on September 9th. Making Music Together will take place on September 16th. The Classic to Romantic Era will be recognized on September 23rd. Western Favorites will be performed on September 30th and Anything Goes on October 7th.
The Basically Baroque Recital on September 2nd will begin at 7:30 pm at St. Jude’s Episcopal Church. The public is invited. The suggested donation for each recital is $8.00 for adults and $4.00 for students. OSU requests that children under the age of six, including infants, not attend as the recital will be recorded and podcast worldwide at orchestraofsouthernutah.org.
