Orchestra o= f Southern Utah Says “Hello Again” to the= 1980s

 

   &nbs= p;        The 1970s, 80s, and 90s will return to Cedar City for the Orches= tra of Southern Utah American Popular Music Recital, part of the Orchestra’s Twelfth Annual Fall Recital Series. &= nbsp; The recital will take place Tuesday, September 9th at 7:3= 0 pm at St.  Jude’s Episcopal Church, 70 North 200 West in Cedar City.

   &nbs= p;        Several talented vocalists and musicians from the Cedar City area will perform at the recital.  The Southern Utah Quartet will perform four pieces: “My Heart = will go on Forever” from Titanic, “You’ll Be in My Heart” from Tarzan, and “Hello Again” and “Love on the Rocks” by Neil Diamond. 

   &nbs= p;        Vocalist Becky Sue Moore and pianist Adrianne Tawa will perform two pieces: “S= end in the Clowns” from the musical A Little Night Music by Stephen Sondheim and ”The Summer Knows” from= The Summer of 42 by Michel Legrand= .  “Send in the Clowns” w= as created specifically for the actress Glynis Johns, who<= /span> played Desiree in the original cast on Broadway.  It became popular, however, after = Judy Collins recorded it in 1975.  = Since that time, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand and many other famous signers ha= ve recorded the song, making it a jazz standard.

   &nbs= p;        Megan Nelson will sing a Duke Ellington Medley for the September 9th recital, acc= ompanied by Maria Reidhead on the piano.  Duke Ellington was an American composer, pianist, and bandleader.  He was most recognized during his = life as one of the most influential jazz figures, though he called his style and sound “American Music” rather than jazz.

        &= nbsp;   Kristin Mabb will perform vocal and piano for “You Light = Up My Life” by Joe Brooks.  This song was orginally sung by Kasey Cisyk for the soundtrack to the film of the same name. It was Pat Boone's daughter, actress Debby B= oone, that made the song a hit when she was recruited to record the song.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>  The single became a massive succes= s, topping the Billboard Hot 100 chart for ten weeks.  The success of the song earned Boo= ne a Grammy Award in 1978.

   &nbs= p;        Christine Reed will sing “The Way We Were” from the 1973 film by the same name.  The film, which starred Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford, told the story of the post World War II marriage between a Jewish Woman and a White Anglo-Saxon Protestant.   It was a tale of both star-c= rossed romance and the importance of commitment.

   &nbs= p;        Sally Hunter Jensen will sing some Joni Mitchell pieces for the American Popular Music Recital. Jensen has extensive performing experience. She is versatile= and enjoys singing a wide range of music from opera to rock and roll.

   &nbs= p;        Cellomania, directed by Nina Hansen, will perform on September 9th as well.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>  Cellomania took first place in the= Utah’s Got= Talent competition held in May 2008.

The American Popular Music = Recital on September 2nd will begin at 7:30 pm at St. Jude’s Episc= opal Church.  The public is invited= .  The suggested donation for each re= cital is $8.00 for adults and $4.00 for students.  OSU requests t= hat children under the age of six, including infants, not attend as the recital will be recorded and podcast worldwide at www.orchestraofsouthernutah.org.<= /span>
