Let’s= Make Music Together

            Come join the Orchestra of Southern Utah on Tuesday, September 16^th f= or an evening entitled “Making Music Together.” The recital will feature ensembles= of three or more. The performance, which is part of the Orchestra’s Fall Recital Series, will begin at 7:30 pm at St. Jude’s Episcopal Church = at 70 North 200 West in Cedar City.

            “Pachelbel Meets U2” by Jon Schmidt will be performed by the Blaine and Kirsten Hofeling Family. Blaine and K= irsten and their nine children recently returned from Nauvoo, Illinois= , where they spent the summer performing in the LDS Nauvoo Pageant. The children actively participate = in Cascade Strings and Suzuki Strings in Cedar City. The two oldest children perform regularly with OSU. Jon Schmi= dt is an American pianist from Salt = Lake City. He describes his style as "New Age Classical,” though some describe his work as New Age with pop element= s of hook and melody.” Jon b= egan songwriting at age 11. His influences include Mannheim Steamroller, Billy J= oel, and Beethoven.

            Violinists Marisa Barth and Callen Crenshaw will perform a duet. Marisa plays with OSU and Callen l= ives in St. George. They both stud= y with Bonnie Romkey and will be accompanied by Mary Ann Andersen on the piano.

            The Southern Utah String Quartet will perform two pieces by Luigi Boccherini: <= o:p>

Minuetto con moto for Quar= tet in A major, Op. 33 No. 6 and Minuetto from Quartet in C major, Op. 39 No. 1. Boccherini was a classical era com= poser and virtuoso cellist from Italy. At the age of 18 he began playing = and composing for Don Luis, the younger brother of King Charles III in Madrid, Spain. During his lif= etime, also performed for the French consul Lucien Bonaparte, as well as King Friedrich Wilhelm II of Prussia.

            Pianist Tracey Bradshaw, cellist Brooke McNaughton, and violinist Sara Penny will p= lay “Trio in E Minor, Op. 67 Allegro non troppo” by Dmitri Shostakovich. Shostakovich wa= s a Russian composer during the Soviet period.= He had a complex and difficult relationship with the Soviet government. His music was officially denounced twice, in 1936 and 1948, and his work was periodically banned. However, he also received a number of honors and state awards and served in the Supreme Soviet, the highest legislative body in the Soviet Union. Despite the official controversy, his= works were popular and well received; he is now considered to be the most talented Soviet composer of his generation.

            “The Flower Song” from Lakme by Leo Delibes and “Evening Prayer” from the opera Hansel and Gretel by Engelbert Humperdi= nck will be performed by vocalists Jackie Jackson and Lara Neves. They will be accompanied by pianist Teresa Redd. Jackie will also= be singing at the OSU Talent Showcase on Thursday, September 18^th at the Heritage Center.

            Vocalist Christine Winterrose, pianist Julie Beck, and violinist Sara Penny will per= form “Here I Am, Lord” by Daniel L. Schutte, arranged by Craig Courtney. “Here I Am, Lord” is a sacred song that was composed when the Catholic Church fir= st began to use vernacular hymns at Mass. Its words are based on Isaiah 6:8 and Samuel 3. It quickly proved to be a popular song at Catholic masses and Protestant services. =

The Making Music Together Recital on September 16th will begin at 7:30 pm at St. Jude’s Episcopal Church. The public is invited. The sugges= ted donation for each recital is $8 for adults and $4 for students. OSU requests t= hat children under the age of six, including infants, not attend as the recital will be recorded and podcast worldwide at www.orchestraofsouthernutah.org. Support for this series comes from= the RAP fund for Recreation, Arts, and Parks administered by Cedar City Corporation. Recitals continu= e each Tuesday through Oct. 7.
