Musical Fea= st Features Something for Everyone

   &nbs= p;        The Orchestra of Southern Utah is pleased to announce their 2008-2009 Concert Season.  The musical selection= s for this season are a veritable cornucopia of sound, directed by Music Director= and Conductor Xun Sung the Assistant Conductor Joel Neves<= /span>.   Showcasing the Western Favor= ites of Patsy Cline, concert classics of Leroy Anderson, a Bruckner Symphony, Handel’s Messiah and American Popular Music, there’s a little something for everyone to love. 

 

Fall Recital = Series

   &nbs= p;        OSU will open their 2008-2009 concert season with their Twelfth Annual Fall Rec= ital Series.   This series of = six evening performances is designed to give area musicians the opportunity to perform for audiences in a more personal setting, as well as providing audiences world-wide the opportunity to hear the performances, as the recit= als are recorded by OSU Media Specialist Ken Hedgecock.  Local audiences enjoy the series <= span class=3DGramE>because the more relaxed atmosphere allows for more interaction with the musicians. 

This year’s recital s= eries begins Tuesday September 2nd at 7:30 pm with Basically Baroque.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>  The recitals will take place every Tuesday evening through October 7th.  Every recital in the series will h= ave a different theme and explore a different area of music.  The recital on September 9th, American Popular, will focus on American music from 1970 to 1990.  Making Music Together will feature ensembles of three or more and take place on September 16th.  Pieces from the Classic to Romanti= c Era will be presented on September 23rd.  The recital on September 30th= , Western Favorites, will highlight the music of the southwestern United States plus the beautiful “Lark Ascending” by Vaughn Williams.  The 12th Annual Recital Series will conclude on October 7th, with an evening simply titl= ed Anything Goes.

Recitals will take place at= St. Jude’s Episcopal Church, located at 70 North 200 West in Cedar City. “This beautiful edifice is an acoustical gem,” stated Recital Director Sara Penny. “The inverted ark design lends itself beautifull= y to small ensembles and voices.  “We appreciate St. Jude’s Episcopal Church for sharing t= heir beautiful building.”  The suggested donation for each recital is $8 for adults and $4 for students.  Donations will be taken at the doo= r.

 

Concerts and = Season Tickets

            = OSU will perform six concerts during their 2008-2009 concert season, including a special February matinee concert designed for families and young children.  All six concerts wi= ll be held at the Heritage Center, 105 North 1= 00 East in Cedar City.  Concerts = are sponsored in part by the Leavitt Group, Cedar City Corporation RAP fund, Ro= cky Mountain Power, Southern Utah Foundation, State Bank of Southern Utah, Sterling and Shel= li Gardner Foundation, and the Utah Arts Council.

   &nbs= p;        Season tickets are available for $35 at the Heritage Center Box Office (105 North = 100 East, Cedar City) and Cedar Music Store and Studio (602 South Main, Cedar City).  Individual concert tickets are ava= ilable at the Heritage Center Box Office one week prior to performances.  The cost is $10 for adults, $5 for students, and $30 for groups of six.  OSU requests that children under the age of six (including infants) = only attend the Children’s Jubilee.  All other concerts and recitals are recorded and podcast on the OSU website, www.orchestraofsouthernutah.org.&n= bsp;

Talent Showca= se

   &nbs= p;        Talent Showcase will take place on Thursday, September 18th at 7:30 pm.  The Talent Showcase will display t= he talents of several soloists, including singing cowboy Steve Downs and renow= ned violinist Doyle Armbrust.  Downs, a Cedar City resident, has recorded his own CD entitled “Look= in’ back, Movin’ on”.  He played with Bar G Wranglers for= seven years, and now has his own band called the Red Hill Rangers.  Armbrust, who recently moved to Chicago, is a violist for Corky Siegel’s Chamber Blues and performs on the Chi= cago Symphony’s Music Now Series.  Additional soloists are Jackie Riddle-Jackson, Tracey Bu, and Johnny Gallis.

   &nbs= p;        OSU will also celebrate the orchestral genius of Leroy Anderson during the Tale= nt Showcase, as part of the Leroy Anderson Centennial tribute taking place throughout the country.  Anderson, born in 1908 to Swedish immig= rants, became "one of the great American masters of light orchestral music" according to famed movie s= core composer John Williams.  "= ;Blue Tango" was the first instrumental recording ever to sell one million copies.  The Christmas classic “Sleigh Ride,” is one of his most famous pieces.  OSU will perform 10 of Anderson= 217;s best-known pieces: “Trumpeter’s Lullaby,” “Bugler’s Holiday,” “Fiddle Faddle,” “B= lue Tango,” “Jazz Pizzicato,” “Old MacDonald Had a Farm,” “The Typewriter,” “The March of the Two Left Feet,” “Girl in Satin,” and “The First Day of Sprin= g. ”

Fall Concert

        &= nbsp;   The Fall Concert will take place on Thursday, November 13th at 7:30 pm.  The concert will include “Piano Concerto No. 1” by Tchaikovsky, featuring soloist Kirill Gliadkovsky and “Symphony No. 4” by Anton Bruckner. 

Gliadkovsky made his first public appearance at the age of 6, and has s= ince toured extensively on three continents performing piano and organ recitals = and as a soloist in Russia= , Italy, the United Kingdom, Poland, Mongolia, Canada, Japan and throughout the United States. He taught at the University of Southern California, Pepperdine University a= nd Santa Monica College, as well as giving numerous masterclasses in Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, Flagstaff, Washington, D.C. and many other cities.  Gliadokovsky jo= ined Southern Utah University in August 2007 as head of the piano department.

A new piece composed by SUU Music Department Chair Keith Bradshaw will = be featured as well as a short work by Charles Ives.

   &nbs= p;        “Symphony No. 4” was Bruckner’s first great success as a composer.  It is better known as the “Romantic Symphony.” It débuted in 1874 but did not beco= me popular until 1881, after some major revisions.

 

Handel’s Messiah

   &nbs= p;        The Handel’s Messiah Concert will be presented on Sunday, December 14th and Monday, December 15th at 7:30 pm.  This holiday concert is provided to the public at no cost, thanks to sponsorship from the State Bank of Southern Utah.

The Messiah has been an ann= ual tradition throughout the world since its premier in 1742.  The premier, however, occurred dur= ing Lent, just before Easter.  This springtime tradition continued every year until after Handel’s death. 

This year will mark the 68<= sup>th annual performance in Ced= ar City.  Every year, OSU forms a special Handel’s Messiah Choir for the December concert.  This choir, and its soloists, is f= rom the Cedar= City area, making this concert a t= ruly local Christmas tradition.  Lo= cal vocalists are invited to sing in the choir without audition and solo auditi= ons will be in October.

Children̵= 7;s Jubilee

            = The Children’s Jubilee (formerly known as the Children’s Carnival) = will be held on Saturday, February 14th at 2:00 pm.  This special concert welcomes fami= lies with children of all ages to come enjoy an afternoon with OSU.  The Jubilee Musical will have musi= cal exhibits, artists, cultural exhibits, and educational activities designed to teach children the joy of music.  A short Rhythm matinee concert is also scheduled for the Jubilee.

   &nbs= p;        Tickets for the Jubilee are $5 per person and cover the concert, exhibits, displays, and activities.  Season ticket= s do not apply for this concert.

 

Rhythm

            = The Rhythm concert will be performed in its entirety on February 26th at 7:30 pm.  Featured soloists in= clude Patrick Roulet and Virginia Stitt.

            Roulet taught percussion at Southern Utah University until June 2008.  He now directs the percussion ense= mble at Towson University near Baltimore.  Roulet is an active percussion performer.  He has made appearances with the S= eattle Symphony, Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra, Boston Civic Orchestra, and t= he American Sinfonietta among other orchestras.

   &nbs= p;        Stitt currently teaches at SUU.  She= has taught students at all stages of their academic careers, from elementary sc= hool through college, and has worked in music education across the United States and Canada.  Stitt has performed in Japan, Canada, and across the Unites= States. She currently performs with the Southwest Symphony and the Orchestra of Southern Utah as well as in local chamber music groups and musical producti= ons.

 

Halversen You= ng Artist Concert

        &= nbsp;   The Halversen Young Artist Concert will take place on April 23rd at = 7:30 pm.  This concluding concert o= f the season is held in memory of Roy L. Halversen, a beloved local musician and teacher.  With a desire to hon= or Halversen’s work with young musicians, OSU established this concert.  The concert spotlights the talents of four young musicians from Southern Utah. Audio auditions are accepted until Dec. 12 with a live audition following in January.  Details are on the website.
