Suite Premiered by Orch= estra of Southern Utah Receives National Honor= s, Again

 

   &nbs= p;        The Spanish Trail Suite, as perform= ed by the Orchestra of Southern Utah, stirred the hearts and souls of people throughout Southern Utah.  Now people across the country are = taking notice as the Suite has earned = top honors for the third time this year and has been awarded a Silver Telly.

   &nbs= p;        The Spanish Trail Suite was origina= lly commissioned by the Orchestra of Southern Utah with help from the National Endowment of the Arts and local foundations in 2005. Composers Marshall McDonald and Steven Sharp Nelson created a piece celebrating the three cult= ures which settled the West along the route of trails stretching from Santa Fe to Los Angeles: Native Americans, the Span= ish, and the Pioneers.

         &= nbsp;  After premiering the Suite in 2006, t= he Friends of Music Guild and OSU partnered with Video Ideas of Chattanooga, Tennessee= to create a high definition interactive video enhancement for the Suite.  The interactive project focused on= more than 100 miles of the Trail in Iron and Washington Counties= .  This video enhancement premie= red during the OSU Roy L. Halversen Young Artist Concert in April 2008.  The Spanish Trail Suite DVD was awarded the Telly in June.  The Telly, according to Video Ideas president Jerry Waddell, “just verifies how incredible the Spanish Trail Suite music score, the performance and the vid= eo presentation are!”

         &= nbsp;  “The Telly A= wards honor the very best local, regional, and cable television commercials and programs, as well as the finest video and film productions, and work create= d for the Web.” The Telly Awards website stated, “Since 1978, the Telly has strived= to strengthen the visual arts community by inspiring, promoting, and supporting creativity. The 28th Annual Telly Awards receiv= ed over 14,000 entries from all 50 states and 5 continents.”  Judges for the Telly evaluate entries to recognize distinction in creative work.  Entries are judged against a high standard of merit. Winning entries are awarded with a Silver or Bronze Telly; there are no Gold Telly Awards.

The Te= lly comes on the heels of two other awards presented to the Orchestra of Southe= rn Utah from the Spanish Trail Suite and the Spanish Trail Suite DVD.  OSU recently accepted the Audrey B= aird Audience Development Award and a Gold Book Online Award of Excellence from = the League of American Orchestras at the League’s June 2008 Conference in= Denver. 

   &nbs= p;        The Audrey Baird Audience Development Award is given to the most creative and successful audience development, and/or ticket-sales projects. Only one Bai= rd is awarded each year.  OSU was awarded the Baird for the video enhancement of the Spanish Trail Suite “We are, of course, thrilled to receive national recognition and want= to thank all of you who made this possible,” stated OSU Manager Sara Pen= ny, who accepted the award on behalf of the Orchestra.

The Aubrey Baird Award was = named for Audrey Baird, a past president of the Volunteer Council and the 1996 recipient of the Gold Baton Award, the League of American Orchestras' highe= st honor. She is a long-time volunteer, organizer, fundraiser, and leader in audience development.  Baird presented the award to Penny during the Conference.

   &nbs= p;        OSU was also awarded the Gold Book Online Award of Excellence for the Spanish Trail Suite DVD.  This award recognizes the outstand= ing efforts of the volunteers who made the DVD a reality.  Only ten of these awards are given= by the League of American Orchestras each year.

     =        Funding for the video enhancement came from the RAP fund for Recreation, Arts and P= arks in Cedar = City.  The Cedar City/Brian Head Tourism = Board also assisted.  The spectacular scenery of our area plus the tribute to the three founding cultures may now= be enjoyed by people all over the world.  To order a DVD send $25 to OSU, P.O.    &nbs= p;        The Audrey Baird and Gold Book Online Awards are currently on display at the Ce= dar City/Iron Country Visitor’s Center 581 North Main in Cedar City.  The awards are part of a larger ex= hibit detailing the Spanish Trail Suite Video Enhancement project.
