Fun with popular music of the ‘60’s

Master Singers            The Orchestra of Southern Utah continues its Ninth Annual Recital Series on Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 7:30 P.M., in St. Jude’s Episcopal Church, 70 North 200 West in Cedar City.  Recitals are every Tuesday evening until Oct. 11 and will feature a different theme each week.

Musical styles changed dramatically during the turbulent 1960’s with popular youth music developing from folk music towards rock and roll.  Musical theatre was also a favorite pastime.  This recital features all these genres of music.

Gina GinouvesGina Ginouves, vocalist and guitarist, sings “What is a Youth?” from the motion picture Romeo and Juliet with violist Ling Yu.   Gina has sung with the choirs at BYU and the Sacramento Symphony Orchestra Choir, as well as soloing locally in Handel’s Messiah. Ling is currently an adjunct professor of viola at Southern Utah University, and is a member of the newly founded SUU Halversen String Quartet.

The Southern Utah String Quartet plays selections from favorite musicals, such as Camelot, On a Clear Day (You Can See Forever), and “Try to Remember” from The Fantasticks. Camelot was a favorite on Broadway and became a symbol for the Kennedy years.  On a Clear Day (You Can See Forever) took an optimistic and romantic spin on life.  The off-Broadway hit The Fantasticks played for a number of years and its song, “Try to Remember,” is a bittersweet piece from a father’s musings on his children’s childhood.

“If Ever I Could Leave You” from Camelot features vocalist Fred Dunnell with his daughter Teri Kenney on piano.  They will also perform “What a Wonderful World.”  This duo has performed for various community functions.

Husband and wife vocalists Andrew and Kristin Briggs and Marlo and Wyett Ihler present a Beatles’ favorite, “Can’t Buy Me Love.”  All four singers have performed with Southern Utah University’s OPUS Chamber Choir and Concert Choir.  Andrew and Kristin are voice majors at SUU and will graduate next year.  Ling YuMarlo is currently the manager for OSU and has performed in opera, musical theatre, choirs, and with the Utah Shakespearean Festival.  Wyett is a former member of the men’s group, Simple Men, and sings with the Master Singers.

“Elvis Lives!” is a tribute to the king of rock and roll featuring Richard Beers.  A native of St. George, he is a student at Dixie State College and a vocal student of Jackie Jackson.  Richard is well-versed classical singer, but has also performed in musicals and is a member of the DSC Chamber Choir.

David Bolsover, saxophone, and Patrick Roulet, percussion, will perform “The Shadow of Your Smile” and “Work Song.”  David played professionally in Florida before relocating to Utah.  He has performed with Win Seegmiller’s Big Band and the group “Route 66.”  Patrick is an assistant professor of music at Southern Utah University where he teaches percussion, jazz, and music history.

Local men’s choir, the Master Singers, under the direction of James Harrison, sing a variety of favorite tunes, including “Sunrise, Sunset” and “Our Best to You.”  Roland Williams will accompany on piano.  The Mastersingers was started in the 1940's and consists of nearly 80 men from Cedar City and the surrounding areas.  They recently performed at OSU’s Choral Celebration 2005.

Suggested donation is $5 for adults and $3 for students.  For further information, visit www.orchestraofsouthernutah.org or contact OSU Manager, Marlo Ihler, at 867-8501.
