Messiah Choir Rehearsals Begin

 

Choir rehearsals for the 64r= d Annual Cedar City performance of Handel’s Messiah begin Sunday, October 24, at 7:00 p.m. Rehearsals will be held at the Community Presbyter= ian Church, 2279 N. Wedgewood.  Community vocalists of all voice parts, especially tenors and basses, are invited to participate in the choir.&n= bsp; Participants are asked to provide their own music, which is available for purchase at Munson’s Music World, 586-8742, and Trouvere School of Music, 586-0177.  Ad= rianne Tawa will be conducting the choir rehearsals.

 

Holiday performances of the “Messiah̶= 1; have a long-standing tradition in Cedar City.  In 1924 William H. Manning, who wa= s the head of the Branch Agricultural College (BAC) Music Department, chose to perform the “Messiah” on New Year’s Day 1925 with = the choir accompanied by an orchestra drawn from the community and the BAC. Beginning in December 1940, this inspiring oratorio has been presented near= ly every year to the present as a “Christmas gift to the community.”  The year 20= 04 marks the 64th production of this timeless classic in Cedar City= .

 

The Messiah performances will be on December 12 and 13= at the Heritage Center, 105 North 100 East, with Xun Sun conducting.  The Orchestra of Southern Utah will accompany the choir.&nb= sp; For further information, contact orchestra manager Marlo Ihler at 867-8501.
