Music of the Classical Era on Recital

The Orchestra of Southern Utah continues its Ninth Annual Recital Series on Tuesday, Sept. 20, at 7:30 P.M., in St. Jude’s Episcopal Church, 70 North 200 West in Cedar City.  Recitals are every Tuesday evening until Oct. 11 and will feature a different theme each week.

The musical world celebrates the 250th birthday of Mozart this coming January.  At this recital, audience members enjoy music commemorating the classical era from 1770 to 1800.  During these 30 years the music of Mozart, Haydn, Boccherini, and the early works of Beethoven graced the musical scene.

Soprano Megan Harris sings the aria “Volta la Terrera” form Verdi’s opera Un ballo maschera.  Megan is a junior at Dixie High School and will perform as Hodel in their upcoming performance of Fiddler on the Roof.   Tenor Tyler Reidhead, a junior at Cedar High School, will join Megan for a second piece.  Both singers are members of their school’s Madrigal choirs and will be accompanied by Maria Reidhead on piano.

Violinist and OSU recital director Sara Penny presents a movement from Mozart’s “Concerto No. 5 in A Major.”  JoAnn Jones accompanies her on piano.  Mozart played violin as well as piano.  This violin concerto was the last of a set of five, three of which were composed when he was only 19 years old.  The violin Sara will play is dated 1825, just beyond the classical period.

Virginia Stitt and Emily Park Grady will perform a movement from Wanhal’s “Concerto in F Major” on bassoon, with Julia Lee on piano.  Virginia is a professor of music at Southern Utah University and is a member of the Orchestra of Southern Utah and the Southwest Symphony, as well as music director for the Utah Shakespearean Festival’s Revel’s Company.  Emily also plays with OSU.

Vocalists LuWenn Jones and Jackie Riddle-Jackson are set to perform the opening scene from Mozart’s opera Cosi Fan Tutti.  Both are accomplished singers and perform regularly throughout the community and region.  Maria Reidhead accompanies them on piano.

Beethoven’s “Trio in B flat Major, Op. 11” is presented by George Stoffan on clarinet, Joan Hovda on ‘cello, and Rachel Roulet on piano.  George teaches clarinet at Southern Utah University and performs with the Orchestra of Southern Utah.  Joan and Rachel are professional musicians and have performed throughout the region and country.

The Southern Utah String Quartet, accompanied by pianist Teri Kenney, is set to perform a “Polonaise” by Luigi Boccherini.  The polonaise is a Polish military dance.  Boccherini was a cellist and chamber music was very popular for court and home performances.  Quartet members include Patty Walser and Suzanne Stewart on violin, Sara Penny on viola, and Leah Brown on ‘cello.
