Xun Sun

 

Appointed to his current position as the Music Director and Conductor of the Orchestra of Southern in 2003, Mr. Xun Sun also serves as the Director of Orchestral Activities and Assistant Professor of Music at Southern Utah University since 2001. He is also the principal guest conductor of the Hunan Symphony Orchestra, China.   As a conductor, Mr. Sun has made many appearances over the years in concert series and educational programs. In 2004, he successfully conducted the opera Susanna by Carlisle Floyd. He recently has been invited to conduct the Lamont Symphony Orchestra in Denver Colorado, American Youth Symphony in Los Angeles, Lincoln Youth Symphony in Utah and the Hunan Symphony Orchestra. His engaged performances as guest conductor in 2007 include Renming University of China’s Symphony Orchestra in Beijing, Lviv Philharmonic in Ukraine, and the opera Hansel and Gretel by Humperdinck with SUU Department of Music.

 

Born in City of Taiyuan, China, Professor Xun Sun manifested distinctive musical talent at an early age. He began his formal music training and violin studies at Wuhan Conservatory of Music at age 11 through the government’s scholarship program for exceptional music students.  Awarded an Evelyn Nelson Ryan Concertmaster Fellowship, Xun Sun earned his two Master of Music degrees in Instrumental Conducting and Violin Performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music. He is currently pursuing his doctoral degree from Columbia University, New York.
