Recital Makes Memories

The Orchestra of Southern Utah presents their Musical Memories Recital on Tuesday, October 4 at 7:30 pm at St. Jude’s Episcopal Church, in partnership with the Iron County Domestic Violence Coalition.  The Coalition provides community education and supportive resources to assist adult and child survivors of domestic violence.  The Orchestra is pleased to help make the public more aware of their work through this recital.

In Jubilo performs “Down in the Valley to Pray”, an African Spiritual arranged by Michael Cleveland, and Traditional Folk Song “Be Thou My Vision.” The all-woman choir also sings “As Torrents In Summer,” words by Longfellow and music by Nobel Cain; “A Prairie Woman Sings” by Eugene Bulter, and “The Poet Sings” by Z Randall Stroope.  In Jubilo is directed by Jackie Jackson.

Cellist Nina Hansen and pianist Kristina McGuire play Theme from Schindler’s List by John Williams. Hansen is the director of CelloMania and plays cello for OSU. 

Hannah Kaufman sings “Earth Song” by Michael Jackson.  Kaufman is a student at Cedar Middle School.  She has performed with the Utah Shakespeare Festival Playmakers in several productions, including Seussical, Merry Wives of Windsor, and Christmas Carol. She also portrayed the Witch in the Cedar Middle School 2010 production of Into the Woods. Judith Larsen accompanies Kaufman.

Pianist Gerald Rheault and oboist Hilary Savros perform “Interméde Champêtre” by Phillippe Gaubert.  Rheault is Assistant Conductor for OSU and the Musical  Director for SUU Theatre Dept.  Stavros teaches elementary orchestra for Iron County School District and plays oboe for the Orchestra.

Holly Barrick, Madison Barrick and Lauren Barrick sing “I Know It’s Today” by Jeanine Tesori.  Holly  Barrick teaches vocal and performing arts.  Madison Barrick performed in the Utah Shakespeare Festival 2011 Music Man as well as several USF Playmakers productions.  Lauren Barrick is the eight-year-old daughter of Holly Barrick.

Vocalist Fred Dunnell sings “Trees” by Joyce Kimer and Oscar Rasbach, as well as “Mattinata” by Ruggiero Leoncavallo. Dunnell has performed on multiple occasions with the OSU Fall Recital Series over the years.  His daughter Teri Kenney accompanies him.

Pianist Benjamin Morton plays Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, 1st Movement as transcribed by Liszt. He has studied piano from Sally MacArthur in South Carolina since the age of six. He is now a freshman at Southern Utah University majoring in music. He also enjoys playing the tin whistle.

The OSU Musical Memories Recital is held at St. Jude’s Episcopal Church, 70 North 200 East, in Cedar City, and begin at 7:30 pm.  A suggested donation of $5 for adults and $3 for students (ages six and older) is appreciated.  Please note that recitals are recorded, so only children over the age of six, please.  For more information on the Musical Memories Recital or the Orchestra of Southern Utah, please visit www.orchestraofsouthernutah.org or call Sara Penny at (435) 586 2286.
